The Milky Way rises over the Alps as photographed from an atmospheric observatory station near the peak of Zugspitze, the highest mountain in Germany reaching about 3000 meters.
It lies at the border with Austria. The research station studies the distribution of water vapor in the atmosphere (troposphere) using a laser experiment known as LIDAR.
